Grandma's Vasilopita (New Year's Cake)

Published on 29.12.2015 under Mediterranean Recipes

The original recipe of my ... great grandmother ! This Vasilopita is very aromatic and tasty. The texture reminds of pudding. Do not forget to put the lucky coin in it before baking it!

It is simple to prepare but you have to follow each step very carefully, since a single mistake might actually ... ruin the result!

Here are the INGREDIENTS you are going to need:

  • 4 1/2 cup of flour
  • 1 sharp teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 sharp teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 whole egg
  • orange zest of 1 orange
  • 4 tablespoons milk or orange juice
  • 6-7 cloves

PREPARATION:

1) Mix your flour with  baking powder and salt.

2) In a separate bowl, mix very very well your butter and sugar until they become even. Add the egg yolks and orange zest.

3) Still mixing, add little by little the milk ( or orange juice) and start adding as much flour needed to end up with a rather firm dough.

4) When finished, put it in your refrigerator for 2 hours.

5) Put greaseproof paper in a 26cm diameter pan and pour in the dough. DO NOT FORGET TO WRAP A COIN IN FOIL AND ADD IT!

6) Press it well with your hands to make the surface even and pinch the dough with a fork two times at each edge.

7) Brush it with the egg and stick in the cloves.

8) bake in a moderate temperature for 40 minutes.

READY !

Whoever finds the coin, will have a lucky 2016!

Love,

Katsikaki ( aka Baby Goat)
